What makes organic cotton so special?

You probably have heard that natural fibres are healthier than synthetics. However, even if you are already preferring natural, you might not know that there is also a huge difference. Is it just ordinary or organic material?

The biggest difference is in cotton. Nowadays conversely grown cotton isn’t an innocent choice because 25% of the pesticides and insecticides that are used in agriculture are meant only for conventionally grown cotton. Nevertheless, cotton covers only 3% of the world`s cultivated land. The other part is conversely grown cotton processing which receives intensive chemical treatment and additionally colouring from chemicals. You just can’t wash it out!   A large proportion of these toxins seep into the soil to the detriment of both surface and ground water. When some of it it comes into contact with cotton fibre it might mean a potential allergen for the garment user.

According to research, a T shirt made of ordinary cotton consists of 25 grams of chemicals. Conventionally grown cotton can consist of up to 73 % of natural fibre whilst the rest is chemicals from different processes.  

There is a misunderstanding also with certificates. The well-known OEKO Certificate means that toxic chemicals have not been used however it is still not organic fabric.

Of course, organic cotton is special, because less than one percent of all cotton grown is organic. Growing may be hard work but it’s worth it!
